The Arc of Vigo County is governed by a Board of Directors.  They represent residents of the Wabash Valley Region, which includes the greater Terre Haute, Indiana Region, several parents of consumers with disabilities, in addition to educators, business officials and other concerned citizens.

The Arc of Vigo County was originally founded in 1966 by a group of interested parents, educators, business officials and other concerned citizens who recognized the importance of developing local programs to serve persons with developmental disabilities in the Wabash Valley area so that these individuals could remain with their families in the community, instead of being relocated to segregated institutional settings far away from home.

The Arc of Vigo County had one of the first respite programs in the state of Indiana in 1983 and the first supported employment program in 1990.  The Arc stood alone as the first non-institutional, non-facility based provider of community-based support services in Indiana. In 1992, The Arc was proactive in serving the second Medicaid waiver recipient in the state of Indiana.  Today, The Arc continues to operate as a facility, non-profit, “grass-roots” organization in Vigo County that provides a wide array of community-based support services to individuals with developmental disabilities.  This has enabled our consumers to lead more independent and productive lives within their community – living, working, and playing – using the same community resources that all of us utilize on a daily basis.

The Arc’s Community Support Services (CSS) Program offers services to individuals with developmental disabilities, including but not limited to respite, personal assistance, attendant care, and individualized habilitation services.  The Arc provides these services to consumers residing throughout Vigo County and the four surrounding counties – Clay, Parke, Vermillion and Sullivan.

The Arc of Vigo County is funded by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, the Vigo County Council, private and third party payors, and is subsidized through private donations.
